Om Puri Gets A Memoriam Tribute At The Oscars 2017
Late actor Om Puri was a part of the Memoriam tribute at the Academy Awards 2017. He was remembered among other Hollywood stars who passed away in 2016.

An AV recalling Om Puri’s great work towards the world of cinema was played at the awards night.  He was surely an actor of high calibre not just in India but across the seas as well.

Om Puri bagged international fame with his British films such as My Son The Fanatic (1997), East Is East (1999) and The Parole Officer (2001). He appeared in Hollywood films including City of Joy (1992), opposite Patrick Swayze; Wolf (1994) with Jack Nicholson; and The Ghost and the Darkness (1996) opposite Val Kilmer. In 2007, he appeared as General Zia-ul-Haq in Charlie Wilson's War, which stars Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. In 2014, he appeared opposite Helen Mirren in the comedy-drama The Hundred-Foot Journey.

His last appearance in a British-Indian film will be in Gurinder Chadha's Viceroy's House.

The actor was awarded the Padma Shri in 1990. Born in Ambala, Haryana, to a Railway officer, Om Puri studied at Pune's famous Film and Television Institute of India. He was also in the class of 1973 at the National School of Drama, where Naseeruddin Shah was his fellow student. Om Puri made his debut with the 1976 Marathi film Ghashiram Kotwal, based on a play by Vijay Tendulkar.

His claim to fame was his groundbreaking work in films like Ardh Satya, Aakrosh and Paar and who can forget his iconic roles in films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Maachis.

Om Puri being remembered at the Oscars 2017 is surely a moment of pride!
